On September 13, 2023, in the vibrant township of Gugulethu, we embarked on an extraordinary journey of community and growth. It was one of those perfect spring days that beckoned us to step outside and celebrate life together.

As the streets of Gugulethu remained peacefully quiet, with children absorbed in their studies, the soothing sounds of 80s and 90s kwato music played in the background, taking us on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It was a day that felt like a page torn from the good oldern days, when life was simpler, and community meant everything.

Our mission for the day was to transform the old community garden into a thriving urban garden and cafe, a place where stories, knowledge, and love could flourish. And what a day it turned out to be!

Our beloved senior volunteers, with years of wisdom etched into their smiling faces, gathered to share their invaluable knowledge. They spoke of medicinal trees and how they’ve been used for both spiritual and health benefits throughout the ages. Imagine sitting under the shade of a centuries-old tree, sipping on fresh coffee and indulging in warm vanilla muffins and amagwinya straight from the oven. The taste of these treats was only surpassed by the richness of the stories shared.

But that’s not all! It was a day of learning as well. Our senior mentors taught us the art of crafting our very own compost, a vital skill for nurturing our budding urban garden. Their patience and guidance were inspiring, reminding us that there is always something new to learn, no matter how old or young we are.

This heartwarming day reaffirmed the significance of spaces like our urban peopleize center. It’s a place where senior citizens and youngsters come together, bridging generations and nurturing the development of Gugulethu.
