Building the Vertical Pallets: Materials Needed:
  • Wooden Pallets (standard size)
  • Wooden Boards (sourced from pallets for creating level floors and side boundaries)
  • Potting Soil or Compost Seeds or Seedlings Nails (recommended sizes: 2-inch and 3-inch)
  • Hammer
  • Measuring Tape
  • Level
  • Equipment Needed: Saw (for cutting wooden boards if needed)

Steps:

1. Prepare the Pallets: Clean the pallets to remove any debris or dirt. If necessary, cut the pallets to size using a saw.

2. Creating Level Floors and Side Boundaries:

Step 2.1:
Measure and Cut Wooden Boards: Measure the width and depth of the openings between the slats on each level of the pallet. Cut wooden boards from the pallets to match the measured dimensions. These boards will serve as the level floors for each tier.

Step 2.2:
Attach Level Floor Boards: Place the cut wooden boards inside the openings on each level of the pallet. Align the boards to create a flat surface within each tier. Use nails to secure the level floor boards to the pallet structure. Hammer the nails through the boards and into the pallet slats to hold them in place.

Step 2.3:
Create Side Boundaries: Measure the height of the openings on each level to determine the height of the side boundaries. Cut additional wooden boards from the pallets to match the measured height. These boards will act as side boundaries to hold the soil in place.

Step 2.4:
Attach Side Boundary Boards: Position the cut side boundary boards vertically along the sides of each level, enclosing the planting area. Use nails to attach the side boundary boards to the pallet structure. Hammer the nails through the boards and into the pallet slats, ensuring a secure attachment.

Step 2.5:
Optional: Reinforce with Corner Braces (Optional): To enhance stability, you can add corner braces at the intersections of the level floor and side boundary boards. Measure and cut shorter wooden boards from the pallets to fit diagonally across each corner of the pallet. Attach these corner braces using nails, driving the nails through the braces and into the level floor and side boundary boards.

3. Fill with Soil: Fill the pallet with potting soil or compost, pressing it down gently to compact it.

4. Planting: Plant seeds or seedlings into the defined planting areas on each tier, following recommended spacing for each crop.

5. Mounting and Placement (If Applicable): Lean the pallet vertically against a sturdy structure such as a fence or wall. Ensure the pallet is securely positioned and level.

6. Watering: Water the plants regularly, allowing excess water to drain out.

7. Maintenance: As the plants grow, guide them through the openings to ensure proper growth. Monitor soil moisture and adjust watering as needed.
