For Mlindeli Kwaza, chicken farming began with something simple: a love for farming and inspiration from what he saw around him.
Growing up, Mlindeli noticed that his neighbour had chickens. He admired them and became interested in the idea of keeping chickens himself. He told himself that if an opportunity ever came his way, he would take it and start his own small chicken-farming project.
Caring for his growing flock

That opportunity eventually arrived, and Mlindeli decided to turn his interest into action. He managed to get 15 chicks, which he has patiently cared for and raised. The chicks are now almost four months old, marking an important milestone in his farming journey.

What makes Mlindeli’s story particularly inspiring is his DIY mentality and determination. He did not have all the resources needed to start. He had no chicken feed, no ready-made chicken coop, and limited funds. Instead of allowing these challenges to stop him, he believed that if he started with what he had, the necessary opportunities and resources would eventually come.
With determination, Mlindeli managed to source poles and other materials and began building his own chicken coop. His approach was simple: make a plan, use what is available, and keep moving forward.
His journey shows that farming does not always have to begin with large amounts of money or expensive equipment. Sometimes, it begins with a dream, determination, creativity, and the willingness to start small.
As the chickens continue to grow, Mlindeli is looking ahead to the next stage of his project. His hope is to begin breeding by December, taking another important step toward developing his chicken-farming venture.
Mlindeli’s story is a reminder that opportunities can grow from the smallest beginnings. What started with watching a neighbour’s chickens and developing a love for farming has now become a real farming project — with 15 chickens, a handmade coop, and a vision for the future.
For Mlindeli, this is only the beginning. With his determination and DIY spirit, he hopes to continue growing his flock and turn his passion for farming into a sustainable venture.
